Hello, my name is Matthew Shuey. I am a local web designer based in Ventura, CA. I posses a unique set of skills and have solid experience in online marketing for businesses of all types. My primary goal is to help small and medium sized businesses in my community and abroad gain the ability to succeed with effective online marketing strategies such as website design, search engine optimization and social media.
On this page you will learn more about my personal side, what makes me tick, why I do what I do, and how my personal life “influences” the way I do things.
I come from a diverse cultural background and have a rich heritage that can be traced back to the earliest days of our country’s history. My father’s heritage can be traced back from medieval France and Colonial America. My grandfather served in the Navy During World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. My Mother’s Hispanic heritage originates in the San Fernando – Pacoima, CA area. I am a Native Californian, with a brief history and education in Northern Indiana.
My Web Design Career
My career in Information Technology began in 1998 when I was employed by Teradyne Inc. in Agoura Hills, CA. I was very fortunate at that time to work there because they PAID FOR ALL of my IT training, certifications, and computer related courses. Aside from learning about how computer systems and networks worked , I was heavily exposed to corporate structure and creative ideas. In early 2002 I began to re-discover my creative abilities by using basic drawing and painting programs such as MS Paint and Macromedia Freehand.
In early 2003 I became very good at designing creative advertising pieces. That year I bought my first copy of Macromedia Studio. I learned how to code HTML, use MM Fireworks, MM Flash, and the basics of Photoshop. During these fledgling years of my design career, I began to accept web design projects for a small fee and learned how to do Search Engine Optimization. Very quickly I became proficient at getting websites ranked favorably for keyword search in popular search engines like Google & Yahoo.
Throughout the years I’ve observed that many websites would rise and fall in rankings for keyword searches. I also noticed that websites that were built and optimized by me held steady in keyword rankings. At that point I began to realize that I was doing something right and that my knowledge and intuition could be shared for mutual benefit with other business owners! So in 2005 I became confident that I could do very well on my own by creating professional websites and getting them ranked favorably for keyword searches. Today I have mastered the arts of web design and search engine optimization and will continue to hone and refine my skills for many years to come.
My Personal Interests
Here are a few things in my life that influence the way I live, laugh, love, and work.
Playing the guitar is one of my favorite things to do. I feel that playing the guitar has really helped me with my creativity and problem solving skills. I have a deep appreciation for music of all genres. While I prefer to play and listen to Funk, Reggae, Rock, and Latin Music, it is not uncommon to see me rocking my guitar to popular Hip Hop, Heavy Metal, Grunge, and Alternative Rock Tunes.
Hiking & The Great Outdoors
I spend much of my free time outdoors and unplugged from technology. I strongly believe that WE ALL need to reconnect with mother nature on a regular basis in order for us to renew ourselves and become one with our environment. I spend a good amount of my spare time in the Eastern Sierra Nevada’s hiking and exploring the high country and snow capped peaks of California. When I am outdoors I carefully observe my surroundings by taking notes, photos, and video of my environment which in turn helps me to gain a better understanding of how to balance nature and design together in a way that creates compelling and effective design pieces.
I live in a small beach community in Ventura, CA and spend much of my time there. When I am not busy working or doing the other things I love, I am at the beach doing the things I love with family and friends. There is something about the Ocean that has always attracted my imagination. The island view of the Channel Islands off the Coast of Ventura is one the most stunning ocean vistas on the West Coast and has been an inspiration for my creative work for a lifetime.
P.S. I am open to barter for Beach Rentals on Catalina Island, Yucatan Peninsula, and any of the Hawaiian Islands, except for Kahoʻolawe, Niʻihau
Whether I am at the beach fishing the surf for perch, in a boat hunting for yellowtail off the Channel Islands, or in the Sierra Nevada’s fishing for trophy sized trout, fishing has always been one of my favorite hobbies. Fishing is a lifelong learning process. As a child you learn how to tie knots and how to cast out lures. Then as you become a seasoned angler you begin to learn the habits of your quarry and finally learn how to catch fish on a consistent basis. Angling has taught me to be patient, versatile, and innovative. While I usually practice catch and release, it is not uncommon to see me come home with a gunny sack or stringer of fresh fish.
P.S. I am open to barter with reputable local fishing guides, fishing resorts and charter boats in the Southern California and Sierra Nevada region.
