What are meta tags?

Meta tags are HTML tags written in between the head "<head> </head>" section of a web page. The meta tags consist of many different options that can be used to tell search engines, browsers, and external applications how to interpret the data contained within the meta tags.

This FAQ will explain the two most important meta tags and the Title Tag which are directly related to Search Engine Optimization.

Title Tag: The title tag is used to describe the title of a web page, for example a page about a dog grooming company in Ventura, CA might be titled "Dog Grooming Ventura, CA"

Description Tag: The description tag is used to describe the content of a web page, so our dog grooming page will be described as this, "Dog Grooming company located at 2929 South Main Street in Ventura, CA offers pet sitting, teeth cleaning, and pet training in addition to Dog Grooming"

Keywords Tag: The keywords tag is used to tell search engines the keywords within a specific page. So our dog grooming page will have the following keywords "dog grooming, pet sitting, teeth cleaning, pet grooming ventura"

Although the above title and meta tags have been optimized for search engine optimization, the major search engines give little if any importance to the description and keywords tags unless the entire website has been properly optimized and successfully crawled by Seach Engines.

What is a CMS, or Content Management System?

A content management system is a database driven website editing application that allows website owners and webmasters to easily add web pages, update content, add photos, create forms, and so much more without having any knowledge of HTML. The website updates are made by using an administrative backend. The administrative backend is accessed by logging into the website. A CMS website allows anyone with a computer to update their website from any computer connected to the internet.

What is RSS or a RSS site feed?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed" or "web feed" or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds. Webmasters also subscribe to RSS feeds and publish feed content on their websites to add value and content to their website.

Most modern internet browsers such as Internet Explorer 7, Firefox and Safari have built in RSS readers while older and obsolete browsers such as Internet Explorer 6 and Netscape browsers do not support RSS formats. Users with older browsers must install third party Feed Readers in order to enjoy the benefits of RSS.

The initials "RSS" are used to refer to the following formats:

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

RDF Site Summary (RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90)

Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91).

RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats. Although RSS formats have evolved since March 1999, the RSS icon ("") first gained widespread use in 2005/2006.
